Tasktop Research: Largest Enterprises Now Extending DevOps Process Automation Beyond Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery

Forty Percent to Connect Four or More Collaboration Tools for Feature Ideation, Implementation; Integration Patterns Mapped to Business Drivers

VANCOUVER, BC, Feb. 14, 2018Tasktop, the leader in Value Stream Integration, today announced research results that revealed that the largest enterprises are now extending process automation beyond continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) in order to accelerate software delivery and time-to-market. A full analysis of its findings will be revealed at a webinar on February 28.

In creating value stream diagrams for 300 of the largest U.S. enterprises in multiple industries, Tasktop found that forty percent of them have connected or plan to connect four or more tools in the design and development stages that precede CI/CD. For example, enterprises are integrating their test management tool with their Agile planning tools to automate the flow of defects from QA engineers to developers.

Further, based upon the drivers of process automation, Tasktop identified four primary integration patterns (11 total), which are mapped to specific business drivers.

The significance of so many major companies connecting four or more tools is that it suggests those organizations are making strategic decisions to automate the entire Agile and DevOps toolchain from customer request through deployment so they can reduce the end-to-end lead time and build what customers really want.

“From what we’ve seen, the more tools you integrate to achieve a connected value stream, the more benefits companies generally accrue,” said Nicole Bryan, vice president of product, Tasktop. “A major problem today is that many companies still take a narrow view of DevOps, focusing on integrating only tools in the release pipeline. But to be effective, they need to consider the entire software delivery cycle. Connecting and automating the entire toolchain is a key enabler in the shift from managing software projects to delivering products and business value.”

CI/CD integration improves effectiveness in only one part of the software delivery process. It doesn’t enable enterprises to measure what truly matters: time-to-market from ideation, as opposed to from code check-in. The broader approach enables them to know how fast they can truly deliver business value in addition to how many deployments they can do per day.

Tasktop research also has identified similarities in integration patterns, with four primary ones emerging. These patterns can be mapped directly to the business drivers behind the integrations.

Some drivers behind these integration patterns include the following:

  • Poor visibility into the end-to-end flow of work, making it difficult to measure and improve performance.
  • Regulated industries that require traceability, where every requirement for safety-critical software must be traceable to the lines of code that implement it and the tests that demonstrate that the code actually satisfies it.
  • Degraded productivity due to manual work, duplicate entry, and management through email, spreadsheets and status meetings.
  • Organizations seeking to eliminate disruptions brought about when integrating acquisitions, mergers and reorganizations.

By understanding how drivers map to an integration pattern, organizations can more easily identify the type of tool integrations required in order to achieve their business goals.
