Tasktop’s Mission: We are driving toward an inclusive company culture. We are building a come-as-you-are community of mutual respect and trust. We believe that diverse teams perform better and foster an environment of belonging and inclusion. We aim to continually learn, evolve and be better versions of ourselves.
Color is created by light, a reflection but a perception! A continuum of colors (like the seasons), infinite until the light fades away. We recognize between 2-10 million colors and the average computer screen shows over 16 million hues of color for a single full-color image. Why does the universe choose to live in color? Why not sepia? Or black and white? The universe’s diversity makes it such a visually rich place. Inspirational in every sense of the word. Let’s take a closer look at nature and see how colors coexist.
I’m a short walk away from Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver, BC. Every time I go there I’m blown away, sometimes I can’t even believe my eyes! For instance, there is this giant rhubarb that is cut down to practically nothing every winter and within a few months, it’s back to its Jurassic size.
The beginning of every season is like the opening of a symphony. Soft, subtle and fragile with little bursts of color, before sudden lush explosions ahead of the grand finale…abundance! What a show they put on. Over and over, season after season, nature never ceases to amaze.
Can we zoom into this picture…
One plant, dozens of flowers coming together to mesmerize you; unique colors, a multitude of shades in one beautiful bouquet. A moment to reflect…
Let’s zoom in again…
What’s your favorite color? I’m sure you can think of a few. My numero uno as a child was navy blue, the blue of the Arabian Gulf where I played on the beach growing up (although I’ve built up quite the list of colors since then). For example, I used to hate pink. To me, it was just too feminine and girly. But then my beautiful cousin Mona made it hers. And with that, she seemed to give the color a new dimension. She made it elegant, classy and stylish. Now, pink cherry blossoms are by far my favorite sight in spring. The soft girly pink has won my heart. Let’s reflect some more.
Zoom in further…
A reminder: Colors are actually combinations of other colors. They are willing to put in their heart and soul and not expect an iota of credit. Could this metamorphosis be worth it? Example: Happy optimistic yellow combined with the wise and calming blue creates the refreshing tranquil green. Again, let’s reflect…
Zoom even further (you’re thinking, more? Almost done!)…
The apple fell and Issac Newton reflected and came to the groundbreaking theory: the law of gravity. How about we reflect on color and come to another life-altering realization: Color is light reflected off a surface. Same light, different surfaces, infinite possibilities. We, humans, are of these surfaces.
The “Verse of Light”, from the Quran really hits it home for me:
Now zoom out, as far as you can….
“You think you are a small entity, but within you is enfolded the entire Universe” – Ali ibn Abu Talib 600 CE.
Similarly, from a present-day perspective, Bill Bryson in The Body: A Guide for Occupants says, “Our bodies are a universe of 3.2 trillion cells operating in more or less perfect concert more or less all the time”.
We are 99.9% identical in our DNA. Yet this 0.1% difference creates so much conflict. Maybe we have more to learn from nature. Maybe reflection and understanding can greatly heal our teams and benefit our companies. We’ve seen the shadow cast by different types of bias, how about we try something new?
Naturally, the consequence of reflection is a brilliant shine!
I‘d like to thank the leadership team and the IDEA team for embracing diversity and inclusion.
Most importantly, I’d like to thank you for reflecting with me.
