Tasktop Newsletter - June 2011

If you love Mylyn and Tasktop, please vote for us as the "Most Innovative Java Company" at the JAX Innovation Awards 2011.

Since the release of Tasktop 2.0 in March, we've been very busy. The engineers have been busy rolling out a couple patch releases and working behind the scenes on Tasktop 2.1 (release date TBD). In the meantime, we've also been working hard to come up with a better answer to "What is it that Tasktop does again?" and have produced some videos and additional content to answer this question.

From ALM Automation™, and Task Federation™, to Cross-Repository Agile Planning, Tasktop continues to serve as a thought leader by using IDE integration and ALM interoperability as levers to improve the lives of developers while helping management drive results that they need.

ALM Automation

Tasktop CEO and Mylyn creator, Mik Kersten, introduces the concepts of ALM Automation™ during his keynote at JAX 2011 in Germany. By applying the concepts developed over the past two centuries through the factory automation revolution, Kersten highlights how a similar revolution is desperately needed in software development today and appears to have been kick started by open source and Agile.

In this keynote, Kersten studies Frederick Winslow Taylor's scientific management, Peter Drucker's quality management, and Henry Ford's assembly line, and highlights what ALM Automation would look like to empower the developer, manager, and the organization as a whole.

In this video recording of the JAX keynote, Kersten shows some of the steps we have taken at Tasktop to start putting together ALM Automation by demo'ing "Task-focused Continuous Integration" and talking through the concepts of "Task-focused Continuous Deployment". Finally, Mik closes with some guidance on getting started with ALM Automation today.

Cross-Repository Agile Planning

Tasktop's Doug Janzen presented on Cross-Repository Agile Planning recently. Tasktop has observed that in many large enterprises, Agile methodologies often break down because the tools used by developers don't integrate well with each other. Tasktop's Agile Planning tools are built upon existing popular Agile tools, such as HP's Agile Accelerator and Rally's Agile tooling. Tasktop's Agile Planning Tools extend these popular tools by supporting dependencies in other systems. This in turn provides the traceability that is required but often missing in modern developer organizations.

Task Federation

In March, we announced our Task Federation solution that provides high fidelity, bi-directional synchronization between HP ALM or Quality Center and IBM Rational Team Concert. Since then, we've been deploying this solution to companies around the world and are constantly tweaking the solution based on feedback. We are also actively thinking about what solutions to provide Task Federation between next. If your company has specific needs to have bi-directional synchronization between ALM solutions, do not hesitate to contact your account manager or respond to this email with your suggestion.

The series of Mik's predicitons is finally complete - get the full scoop...

Mik's Prediction Blog Series

"...Developers drive the success of platforms. Whenever a platform shift occurs, such as the shift from proprietary to open source or from desktop to mobile, interest in gaining developer mindshare is renewed. While we may all be overloaded with atmospheric-condition-related acronyms, we are in the middle of a fundamental shift in enterprise software platforms..."

Proposal to Move Hudson to Eclipse

"... As we learned with the rapid exodus off CruiseControl to Hudson, CI tools are a well understood space and easy enough to migrate between. If the differences between Hudson and Jenkins had grown sufficiently large and there was overall confusion and friction among the developer and corporate communities, this would have increased the demand for a new CI solution..."
