Tasktop are also providing a free version of Tasktop called Tasktop Starter, allowing Eclipse Mylyn users
to access some valuable features that are out of the scope of Eclipse and Mylyn, including the Gmail connector
for free, which lets you easily tag conversations in Gmail have them appear in Mylyn’s Task List and be
accessible when working offline.

Rally Software Development Corp.®, the #1 partner for Agile success through its family of products,
coaching and community support, and Tasktop Technologies, Inc., the creator and leader of the Eclipse
Mylyn open source project, has announced two new products and integrations that extend the benefits of
Agile lifecycle management to the developer's desktop.

Tasktop and Protecode are two interesting startups I ran into at EclipseCON 2008...
Mik and team realized that the task-focused nature of Mylyn could be extended to support
everyday use (outside of developers). Tasktop is able to group documents, emails and websites
based on tasks you're working on.

SpringSource, supplier of the Spring Java development framework, is announcing the SpringSource
Tool Suite, which lets Java developers quickly focus on a problem segment of code and use the
Tool Suite's "consultant in a box" to help fix the problem... The adoption [of Mylyn] by SpringSource insures
that Mylyn's problem identification and problem solving characteristics will fit into a major Java
development platform.

Tasktop just announced the Spring 2008 release of their product, built on the Mylyn Framework.
One of the great things about Tasktop is that if you don't use the Eclipse IDE you can still take
advantage of the Task Focused Interface from Mylyn. As Mik noted in his blog posting, the most exciting
thing about this release is that the team were able to respond to all of the community interest for
additional email integration.

The SpringSource Tool Suite builds on Eclipse Mylyn - a task-focused user interface for Eclipse -
and has Spring IDE as a core component...the embedded use of Eclipse Mylyn eases the development
of large Spring-powered applications and incorporates other key features, such as issue tracking
and code quality analysis tools.

Chris Aniszczyk, Jeff McAffer and Ed Merks will be returning as Committer representatives,
joined by the newly elected Doug Gaff and Mik Kersten.

Mylyn is a wonderful task management plugin and I've been using this to keep track of what I
need to do for the day. But somehow I needed a bit more "oomph". Finally, a group of people have
come up with the answer to my predicament. And I have to say, it's now one right up there in my
2008 list of best software!

Take a look at Tasktop, which provides a task-centered interface for tracking and managing
the work week. The software extends the Eclipse Mylyn project tools with Windows desktop integration
that includes the ability to drop Outlook e-mail directly into your task list by placing it in a folder
named @tasktop along with calendar integration with Outlook and Google.

Interface21 and Tasktop Technologies recently announced they would be collaborating on the Spring Tool Suite...
The Spring Tools Suite will also build on Eclipse Mylyn in order to ease the development of large Spring applications,
and incorporate other key features, ranging from issue tracking to code quality, in order to better support a Spring
application's entire lifecycle.

Interface21 is partnering with Tasktop to create a "Spring Tool Suite". This suite will bring
together Spring IDE, the AspectJ Development Tools (AJDT), AspectJ, and Mylyn to create a task-focused
approach to the development of Spring-powered enterprise applications.

Interface21, developer of Spring application framework has announced that it will partner with
Tasktop Technologies, creator of the Eclipse Mylyn project, to develop the Spring Tool Suite,
an integrated set of tools featuring Mylyn's task-focused user interface for building enterprise
Java applications. The suite will allow teams of developers to more easily manage very large applications
by emphasizing the relevant portions a developer is working on, with more-graphical, more-easy to navigate
views, while minimizing the parts of the structure that aren't relevant in that particular context.

Interface 21 is working with Tasktop Technologies to make it easier for Java software developers
to stay organized while collaborating and juggling multiple tasks. The two companies have teamed
up to add Tasktop's open source Mylyn task and content management solution, part of the Eclipse
Project, to Interface 21's upcoming Spring Tool Suite product.

Today an article titled Focusing JEE Development: Mylyn and Spring authored by Mik Kersten,
the project-lead of the Eclipse Mylyn Project, has been published on the JDJ website. This article
outlines some of the recent achievements in the tooling area to manage the complexity of modern
enterprise development. Furthermore it mentions some stuff that should come to an IDE near you very soon...
|
|
The recently announced partnership between Interface21, the company behind the Spring Framework,
and Tasktop Technologies, the company leading the Mylyn project, mean that the Task-Focused UI will
soon be supporting much more of an enterprise application's life cycle. In other words, just as Mylyn
has already simplified the development of large Java SE and plug-in applications, over the course of
the next year we are going to see the same simplification working across the various resources,
frameworks, and tools involved in building Spring-based Java EE applications.

Mik Kersten, the lead of the Mylar project, is presenting an interesting talk at JAX India,
"Tasktop: the Task-focused Desktop". Mik's work at TaskTop fits well with the JBuilder team's
use of Mylar and contains additional thoughts beyond my keynote. From his abstract, "In a similar
way to how the Mylar developer tools are transforming the productivity of Java programmers, the
Tasktop is set to bring about a fundamental improvement in the productivity and working conditions
of knowledge workers worldwide."
|
|
|
|
Mylar's task-focused UI has changed the way that developers work today. It focuses the Eclipse
IDE to show only the information relevant to the task at hand, making working with large systems
and multi-tasking a far easier job.
|
|
I had lunch with Mik Kersten, the driving force behind the suddenly very popular Mylar
plug-in to Eclipse that helps you organize tasks and the data that goes with them. He's
working on a similar idea for desktops at his new company, Tasktop. From what I saw this
will be very useful in managing the mass of data we all deal with daily.
|
|
Mylar's task-focused interaction technology has improved the way developers work. Current
IDEs overload developers with tens of thousands of source code artifacts, meaning that
team members often spend more time searching, scrolling, and navigating than programming.
Mylar enhances developer productivity by seamlessly integrating tasks into Eclipse and
automatically managing the context of those tasks as developers work.
|
|
CollabNet, the primary sponsor of the Subversion® open source project and leading provider
of collaborative software development solutions, today announced that it has partnered with
Tasktop Technologies, the company newly formed by the creators of the Mylar open source project,
to seamlessly integrate Eclipse, Mylar, Subversion and CollabNet. The integration of these
leading development tools is the first of its kind and creates a highly productive working
environment that makes tasks an integrated part of the developer's workflow throughout the
lifecycle of a project.
|
|
Specifically, Mylar helps developers filter out extraneous tasks to concentrate only on
the ones relevant to them, or to their particular project. So it groups related tasks
such as bug tracking and email into a common task list.
|
|
The consistent Eclipse-based UI between Eclipse, Mylar, CollabNet and Subversion,
the prioritization of tasks and the one-click task switching, make developers a
lot more productive.
